AUSTIN (KXAN) — A local nonprofit IDIA USA (Inspiring Divas of Austin) She will be holding what she says is “Desi’s first wedding-inspired fundraiser” in the Austin area on Sunday evening.
The event, its name “Shadi Mubarak” The group said the project will “recreate the magic of a South Asian wedding” without the social pressures women often face at weddings.
“This event reimagines the traditional shaadi — or wedding — as a symbol of unity, joy and cultural pride, not social pressure,” a press release from the nonprofit said. “By creating a mock wedding experience, IDIAUSA invites the community to immerse themselves in the color, music and magic of a South Asian wedding without the expectation, judgment or gender bias often associated with marriage.”
The main fundraising event is the “Great Mock Wedding Experience.” It will also include music, dance and fashion performances, as well as vendors and food from local South Asian restaurants.
The group said funds raised at the event will fund business mentorship for immigrant women, career development workshops, health and community-building initiatives.
“It is an idea that stems from a desire to build an empowering community just for women that will be a safe place for every woman,” the nonprofit’s page says.
IDIA USA said in its statement that it hopes the event’s theme will also serve as a conversation starter about domestic violence, sexual assault and domestic violence.
This event will be held at the Round Rock Senior Center, located at 301 West Bagdad Street in Round Rock. It runs from 6 to 9 pm on Sunday. Tickets are $20, with a discount for group purchases.
