Wind, rain and king tides expected throughout region this week

(BCN) – The Bay Area will receive strong inundation this week from the region’s first atmospheric river of the rainy season, according to the National Weather Service. The storm’s rainstorm is expected to begin early Monday night in the Far North Bay, but is expected to intensify late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, according to Weather Service meteorologist Roger Gass.

“Overall, we expect to say anywhere from 1 1/12 to 2 1/2 inches at higher elevations in the North Bay and anywhere from 1 to 2 inches in Sonoma, Marin and Napa,” Gass said.

Rainfall totals will be lower as the storm moves south, with San Francisco expecting rainfall to range from half an inch to about an inch and San Jose expecting about a third of an inch. Higher elevations in the Santa Cruz Mountains could range from a half-inch to an inch, with some locations getting higher totals if thunderstorms occur in the area, Gass said.

In addition to the rain, high winds and tidal surges are expected across much of the Bay Area through midweek.

“We have a wind warning starting at 10pm tomorrow until 4pm Wednesday,” Gass said.

He said the storm’s southerly winds will generally gust around 45 mph for most of the area, but there is a possibility of winds of about 60 mph at higher elevations such as Mount Diablo and Mount St. Helena.

Also, the weather service issued a tidal flood warning late Tuesday morning through Saturday afternoon for low-lying areas in the North Bay, East Bay, South Bay and along the coast from Santa Cruz to Monterey.

Regional temperatures are expected to peak in the mid to lower 60s, with a slight warming trend expected Thursday after the storm passes.
