“This adrenaline spike is no joke, so so happy!!!” one fan commented underneath a February 2025 Instagram post about the season 3 renewal.
“BEST NEWS EVER,” another person said.

‘Elsbeth’ Season 3 Makes Major Casting Shocker
Along with the show’s season 3 renewal came some shocking casting news. Carra Patterson, who played NYPD Officer Kaya Blanke on the show, said that she would no longer be a series regular on the show in season 3. Instead, she said that she would appear as a guest star.
“My character, Kaya Blanke, is embarking on a new adventure as the story continues to unfold, and I am excited to do the same. But we will see Kaya again – fans will find out what she’s been up to in her new role as ‘Detective’ next season when I come back to guest star and play with Carrie and Wendell. I am beyond grateful to the cast, crew, and producers, and of course, the fans, for all the love and support,” she told Deadline.
Executive Producer Jonathan Tolins spoke about how the show will move forward with Kaya in a reduced role.
“We have developed this habit of introducing new characters as we go and using them in a way that feels organic. I have no intention of forcing someone into the slot that was Kaya’s place on the show. We’re going to go with the flow and see what happens and try some things,” he told Deadline in May 2025. “The wonderful thing is that Carrie Preston is wonderful with everybody. This is not going to be like a Darren Stevens situation. Kaya is irreplaceable. She’s not gone; she’s still part of our world. So we’re going to see what happens. I’m trying very hard not to make any decisions or even think about season 3 much until the writers’ room reconvenes in a few weeks.”
