Trump deploys National Guard to Memphis, calling it a ‘replica’ of his crackdown on Washington

Washington – On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an order to send the National Guard to Memphis to combat crime, which constitutes his latest tests to the borders of the presidential authority using military force in American cities.

Trump released this announcement with Republican Governor Tennessee Bill Lee, who is visiting the Oval Office, describing the “true copy of our successful efforts” in Washington.

This was a reference to last month, when the president deployed the National Guard forces in the country’s capital and photographed the city’s police force in a campaign that has been argued since then a decrease.

Trump said that, in addition to the forces, the payment in Memphis will include officials from various federal agencies, including the FBI, the Anti -Narcotics Department, the enforcement of immigration, customs, and Marshall American service: “We send the great power now.”

Shortly before Trump announced, the White House said on social media that the total crime rate in Memphis was higher than the national average and suggested that the rate had increased since last year, as it was wandering in national trends.

This is despite the recently declining Memphis Police through each of the main crime categories in the first eight months of 2025 compared to the same period in previous years. Police said that the total crime reached its lowest level in 25 years, while the killing was its lowest level in six years.

Despite the overall decline, Memphis deals with the problems of stubborn violence for the weapon for years. In 2023, the city set a record with more than 390 murders.

The governor of Tennessee adopted the deployment of forces as part of a wider law enforcement increase in Memphis. He told me on Monday that he was “tired of the crime with the return of the great city of Memphis.”

Trump first suggested that he would deploy the National Guard in Memphis on Friday, which led to a retreat from the Democratic leader of Memvice, a black majority.

“I did not ask the National Guard, and I do not think this is the way to renew the crime,” Mayor Paul Young said at a press conference on Friday, while recognition of the city remained at a significant increase in the “bad lists”.

Speculation focused on Chicago as the next Trump to send the National Guard and other federal authorities. However, the administration faced fierce resistance from the Democratic Illinois JB Pritzker and other local authorities.

“We will likely do Chicago,” Trump said, but they also suggested that the authorities wait and not act there immediately.

“We want to save these places,” Trump said. Saint Louis and Baltimore have been allocated, but he has not said anywhere he would get federal forces or the National Guard.
