Tony Dungy breaks silence after getting cut from ‘Sunday Night Football’

Tony Dungy said it was “disappointing news” to learn he would not be returning as an analyst for NBC Sports’ “Sunday Night Football” for the 2026 NFL season.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame coach, who completed his 17th season on “Football Night In America” in January, shared the news on Thursday, weeks after a report said he was likely leaving.

“I was informed by NBC that I would not be back with FNIA this fall, and that gave me time to reflect and also look forward,” Dungey, 70, said. Posted by XIncluding a photo with Dan Patrick and Rodney Harrison.

“It’s disappointing news but I’d like to thank the NBC family for making the last 17 years so special. I will have lasting memories of my time there, especially with Rodney Harrison who has become a great friend.”

“God has always guided me in these moments, and while I’m not sure what’s next for me — whether it’s in soccer, in broadcasting, or getting more involved in church and community outreach — I know God has plans for my life and I can’t wait to see them unfold. I’m reminded of one of my favorite verses in the Bible — Romans 8:28. ‘God works all things for the good of those who love the Lord.’

Dungy confirmed his exit from “FNIA” after a report by The Athletic last month said the analyst was unlikely to be part of NBC’s plans to revamp the program.

The contracts of a number of NBC studio football analysts have expired after the 2026 Super Bowl, according to The Athletic.
