Teyana Taylor is opening up about co-parenting with ex-husband Iman Shumpert.
In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club, the singer, actress, and director reflected on her experience raising daughters Junie and Rue with the former NBA player.
“Co-parenting is a little tough because when things are going too good, someone [can] make that go real bad,” she said, adding that her goal is to keep things peaceful.
To help maintain structure, she revealed that she and Shumpert use the Talking Parents app, which allows them to communicate about their children while avoiding unnecessary conflict.
“It controls your tone. It controls whatever it is. At this point, if it doesn’t have anything to do with the kids, we don’t have anything to talk about,” she explained.
Still, the mom of two says she makes the effort to include Shumpert in family milestones.
“I always reach out to him. I’m like, ‘Yo, I’m doing Junie’s birthday. I’m doing Rue’s birthday. Would you like us to do it together?’ And he’s like, ‘Nah, I’m good.’ I don’t entertain the shots that are being thrown. Here’s the invite. If you want to pop in, cool,” she shared.
The A Thousand and One star also made it clear she would welcome a healthier dynamic with her ex.
“If he was like, ‘Yo, T, I want us to really stop being silly and let’s really try and healthily co-parent,’ I would absolutely be down,” Taylor said.
Taylor and Shumpert finalized their divorce in 2024 after what she has described as a bitter split. But she says her priority remains protecting their daughters.
“These kids come first. And that’s been the main reason why I’ve wanted to keep everything private. So my job is to protect them no matter what. And I think that’s where, like, I keep, you know, just trying to hold on and hold it down.”
