Broadway’s Jaysha Patel reports on the potential musicians’ strike.
New York — Broadway musicians reached a tentative agreement with the Broadway League to avoid a strike Thursday morning.
802 local musicians have been without contracts since the end of August.
The two sides met with a mediator and were able to reach an agreement.
The initial agreement includes wage increases and an increase in contributions to the health fund. Following the announcement of the tentative agreement, Bob Sutman, President of AFM Local 802, issued the following statement:
“United in solidarity, Broadway Musicians Local 802 are pleased to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement at 4:30 a.m. with the Broadway League that will avert a strike scheduled to begin later today. This three-year agreement provides significant wage increases and health benefits that will preserve critical access to health care for our musicians while maintaining strong contract protections that enable musicians to build a career.” Fixed on Broadway.”
Now, Local 802 will present the tentative agreement to members for ratification.
If the musicians walk, 23 different shows will be affected (stage names are in parentheses):
- Death has become hers (Lonte-Fontanne)
- In time (circle in square)
- Maybe a happy ending, Belasco?
- Queen of Versailles (St. James)
