Spurs Sensation Victor Wembanyama Just Made San Antonio History

The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the most consistently excellent franchises in sports for basically their entire tenure in the NBA. Starting with the likes of George Gervin and David Robinson, the roster has been littered with some of the greatest players of all time.

Add in arguably the greatest head coach in the league’s illustrious history, Gregg Popovich, holding the mantle for two decades, and there aren’t very many team accomplishments that they haven’t already achieved. Which is what made the historic start to the 2025-26 season with Victor Wembanyama finally taking over like a superstar all the more impressive.

The NBA Player Guessing Game allows you to guess the NBA player based on clues about their team, division, height, jersey number, points, and experience.

Victor Wembanyama Has Made the Spurs a Contender

Throughout its illustrious history, the Spurs have become the team with the highest winning percentage among all active NBA franchises. Five-time world champions, they had an 18-year-long streak of winning a minimum of 50 games.

Additionally, they hold the longest streak of making the playoffs as well, with that number even higher at 22. Simply put, they are the hallmark of consistency in basketball, if not sports as a whole.

But after more than 50 years of existence, there was one curious streak that San Antonio hadn’t conquered yet. Despite their unparalleled success, the team had never started the season 5-0.

After they went up 4-0, Wembanyama found out about the occurrence and made a promise to change history this season. Facing a Miami Heat team that he had gone 0-3 against so far in his career, it was going to be a tall task.

A 17-1 run for the Heat to open the fourth quarter gave them the lead and put a damper on hopes for fans. However, a rally to end the game, led by the French superstar himself, paved the way for San Antonio to walk out the victor.

An already historic start to the season became a first for the Spurs, but Wemby had even more records to add to his tally. Stuffing the stat sheet silly, he had 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks, marking the third occasion that he had 25/15/5/5 in a game.

While that would sound impressive on its face, one of the most dominant centers in modern history, Joel Embiid, has the same number of such games, which is the most among all active players.

The only difference? Wembanyama has played in 122 career NBA games, whereas the former MVP has over 450. His pace has set him up as a true MVP candidate this season and elevated San Antonio as a contender in a loaded Western Conference.
