Sonequa Martin-Green on Being Cast in Boston Blue With Donnie Wahlberg

Sonequa Martin-Green is excited to be joining Donnie Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods offshoot series, Boston Blue. The duo’s latest red carpet appearance proved that they already have an incredible camaraderie between them.

“Listen, he already built, he and everyone there at Blue Bloods, in front of and behind the camera, they built something that lasts. Not only has it already lasted, I think it’s going to continue to last and that’s because I think family was at the center of it, in front of and behind the camera. With this man, and everything he’s accomplished in his life and how important he is to our society, it’s a big deal to come into this legacy, having come from my own legacy,” Sonequa, 40, told Extra of preserving the Blue Bloods legacy on Wednesday, May 7.

Donnie, 55, chimed in to say that his colleague has been a part of “a couple of legacies,” referencing her past work on The Walking Dead and Star Trek: Discovery.

“I was going to say there was a legacy before that one as well,” Sonequa said. “God is good. But I don’t take it lightly. He doesn’t take it lightly.”

The New Girl alum went on to say that she and Donnie became fast friends after signing on to do Boston Blue together. “The friendship is solid already. We met and we were friends, like, immediately,” Sonequa added, mentioning that she also met Donnie’s wife, Jenny McCarthy.

For Sonequa, expanding such a beloved franchise is an opportunity she is so thrilled to be a part of.

“I know that it’s going to provide something that people need. I think it’s going to be optimism and hope and family, and I think it’s going to be good for people. I really do,” she continued. “Blue Bloods was so good, and we love the Reagans so much, and for good reason and hopefully we’ll love this new family that we get to meet through Danny’s eyes and through his perspective, and I hope that the legacy continues and I’m so grateful.”

CBS revealed that Sonequa will be playing a character named Lena Peters in Boston Blue. We’re already seeing some similarities between Lena and Danny Reagan because they both come from law enforcement families. Why exactly Danny will be leaving NYC to go work in Boston remains to be seen.

“Something might happen to move him away from New York. But he’s always going to be a Reagan,” Donnie told Fox News Digital in an interview published on May 1. “I stopped looking at this show, Boston Blue, as a … once I started to let go of Blue Bloods, I started to see the opportunity that Boston Blue was. That it’s really a chance for us to carry on the tradition and the legacy of the show. And I know how important it is to the viewers because I share what Blue Bloods meant. It meant a lot to me as well. So I know there’s a lot of excitement and enthusiasm about it.”
