Berkeley, California (CrohnRick & Ann’s, a beloved Berkeley Restaurant, will close this Sunday after nearly 40 years of community service.
The restaurant, known to reprimand it, has been a key element in the eating scene in East Bay since its inception. While the restaurant will stop operations, food will continue to serve at the service of its loyal customers from a new commercial kitchen.
“It is extremely sad to see it, we live in Marin now, we just traveled to say goodbye,” said Grechen Werner-Drake, a former employee who eaten in the restaurant for the last time with her daughters.
Grechen Werner, who worked in Rick & Ann in the late 1990s, remembered her then, and she started as a hostess and eventually became a waitress. “I raised great money that helped me in my college,” she said.
Werner-Drake, who is now a nurse, is at the time in the restaurant to help her learn the Spanish language, a skill that she finds invaluable in her profession. She also formed permanent friendships, including one with a former cook that became her child’s godmother.
Ann Lore, the owner and founder of Rick & Ann, reflected the inspiration behind the restaurant. Before the opening, she and her husband Rick made a wild trip to explore cooking ideas, with the aim of creating dishes with new ingredients.
Lauer shared that the famous idea of Cardamom French came from the time of Rick in Betty’s Ocean View Diner, as he had the opportunity to experience recipes.
Ann Lauer plans to retire and spend more time volunteer in the Berkeleg community, as well as travel, which you love.
With its closure, Rick and Ann are left behind a legacy of good food and the spirit of society. With Ann Lore moving to retirement, the effect of the restaurant will be remembered on its sponsors and employees.
