Should Fantasy Managers Start the 49ers Running Back?

The NFL season is underway, which means that, unfortunately, injuries are rearing their ugly heads. Christian McCaffrey Injury Update

McCaffrey’s injury status remains uncertain as the 49ers prepare for their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The star running back was listed as limited in Thursday’s practice due to a calf injury, raising immediate red flags for fantasy managers who remember his similar issues from 2024.

The timing of this injury designation is particularly concerning. McCaffrey was not listed on Wednesday’s injury report, suggesting he picked up the calf issue either at the tail end of Wednesday’s practice or during Thursday’s session.

This pattern feels eerily familiar to last season’s situation. McCaffrey missed a significant portion of training camp in 2024 with what initially appeared to be a minor calf strain. Fantasy managers and the 49ers organization expected him to play through the issue in Week 1, but he was shockingly ruled inactive. That calf problem eventually developed into bilateral Achilles tendinitis that cost him the first nine weeks of the season.

When McCaffrey did return in Week 10, he looked like his usual dominant self for four games before suffering an unrelated PCL injury that ended his season. The knee injury has fully healed, and McCaffrey participated in all of training camp this year without restrictions.

Friday’s injury report will be crucial in determining his Week 1 availability. If McCaffrey fails to practice on Friday, fantasy managers should begin preparing backup plans immediately. The 49ers have shown they won’t rush him back from calf issues, having learned from last season’s experience.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has not provided definitive updates on McCaffrey’s status, leaving fantasy managers in limbo as the weekend approaches. The team’s cautious approach with calf injuries makes his status genuinely uncertain heading into Sunday.

Friday update: McCaffrey was at Friday’s practice, but worked off by himself on a side field. This is obviously not an encouraging sign and all but confirms this is something that happened to McCaffrey at practice on Wednesday or Thursday. We will have another update when Shanahan speaks to reporters this afternoon.

**At Friday’s press conference, Shanahan confirmed this is, in fact, something that happened at Thursday’s practice.

Friday update 2: McCaffrey officially was listed as a nonparticipant on Friday’s practice report. He drew a questionable tag. Suffice it to say this is a nightmare scenario for fantasy managers. The only scenario in which it is better than last season is that the game is not on Monday night.

The FP-LP-DNP pattern is one in which we rarely see players play. In Week 1, it seems highly unlikely the 49ers will push McCaffrey if he truly is less than 100%.

McCaffrey certainly does not look injured in the clip above, but, of course, practice is a lot different from an actual game where he has to avoid tacklers and take hits. If you roster Brian Robinson Jr., he is a clear start if CMC sits.

McCaffrey Fantasy Outlook

McCaffrey entered 2025 as a consensus first-round fantasy pick despite the injury concerns from last season. Fantasy managers know what he’s capable of when fully healthy.

The calf issue represents a nightmare scenario for fantasy managers who invested a first-round pick in McCaffrey. Last season’s progression from minor calf strain to a lengthy Achilles issue creates legitimate anxiety about this latest development.

If McCaffrey cannot play in Week 1, Robinson would likely step into the feature back role and handle the majority of carries. Robinson offers solid RB2 upside in such a scenario, having shown reliability when given opportunities throughout his career.

Isaac Guerendo could also factor into the backfield rotation, particularly in passing situations where his speed creates mismatches. However, Robinson’s size and experience make him the preferred option for early-down work if McCaffrey sits.

Advising fantasy managers to remain calm feels like a fool’s errand given McCaffrey’s recent injury history with calf problems. While there’s nothing to do until Friday’s practice report emerges, having contingency plans ready is essential for anyone rostering the All-Pro back.
