The Shapsquakes said in a press statement that Mandarić brought the team to San Jose in 1974, making it the first professional sport concession in the city. He would continue to sell the team after three years, but “he finally bought them because of his passion for developing the game in northern California, before selling it again.”
San Jose residents issued the following statement:
We are deeply saddened by the death of our founder and our king for a long time, Milan Mandrick. We are indebted to Milan to bring professional football to San Jose and build earthquakes in one of the longest clubs in the United States. His focus did not help develop football at the popular level and link his club closely to society only in creating countless football fans and players around San Jose and North California, but it will serve as his permanent legacy while continuing sport. Thank you, Milan.

Mandric was present at Pay Pal Park in 2024 for the fiftieth anniversary of the club to honor their opening season.
