RTD preparing for expected demonstrations Saturday

DENVER (KDVR) — The Regional Transportation District said it is taking steps to prepare for the expected large presence of protesters in downtown Denver on Saturday.

The agency said light rail and commuter rail services to Denver Union Station will continue as scheduled — as long as it is safe — and that it has “several” contingency plans that can be “easily implemented” if an external event disrupts bus and fixed-rail rail services.

RTD said that if Union Station closes for safety reasons, connections will not be provided to the facility, but services will continue to operate along the remainder of each individual railway line.

“Agency personnel will actively monitor events in real time to support public safety and, to the greatest extent possible, minimize service interruptions,” RTD said in a statement Saturday.

Bus services downtown will continue as scheduled, in the meantime, unless streets are closed or determined to be unsafe for operations, according to RTD, which said bus routes will be rerouted around street closures, as long as it is “possible and safe.”

RTD said it has been meeting with “third parties” such as the Denver Police Department for several days to receive updates and risk assessments on the situation.

“These coordinated efforts ensure that RTD can quickly integrate information from its public safety partners and easily deploy agency resources as needed or warranted,” the agency said.

RTD said its Transit Police Department will also increase its patrols and officer presence “to support the personal safety and security of customers and employees.”
