British pop icon Robbie Williams has publicly disclosed his recent Tourette syndrome diagnosis, marking a significant moment in the singer’s ongoing journey with mental health challenges. The revelation came during his appearance on the podcast I’m ADHD! No You’re Not, hosted by Paul Whitehouse and Dr. Mine Conkbayir, where the 51-year-old opened up about his experience with the neurodevelopmental disorder.
Robbie Williams explained that his condition manifests differently from typical cases, with internal symptoms rather than external physical tics. The singer described experiencing persistent intrusive thoughts instead of the involuntary movements or sounds commonly associated with Tourette syndrome.
“I’ve just realized that I have Tourette’s, but they don’t come out,” Williams stated during the October 2 episode. “They are intrusive thoughts that happen.”
The diagnosis represents another layer in Williams’ complex relationship with mental health. The former Take That member has previously been open about his battles with ADHD and addiction throughout his career. During the podcast conversation, Williams reflected on the moment this realization occurred, describing how a simple walk helped him connect the dots about his condition.
“I was just walking down the road the other day and I realized that these intrusive thoughts are inside Tourette’s,” the English musician explained. “Not only that, you would think that a stadium full of people professing their love to you would work [as a distraction], but whatever it is, inside me, cannot hear it. I cannot take it in.”
The singer’s candid admission highlights how Tourette syndrome can affect individuals differently. While many people associate the condition with visible tics, Williams’ experience demonstrates that the disorder exists on a spectrum. His struggles persist even during moments of professional triumph, revealing the profound impact these internal battles have on his daily life and performances.
Williams also discussed seeking a more formal medical assessment, explaining that an official diagnosis would provide him with greater clarity about his experiences. He expressed hope that understanding his condition would help explain why he feels uncomfortable in his own skin.

“When I’m in bed, that’s my comfort zone. Anywhere outside of that bed is my discomfort zone,” Williams shared, describing his ongoing struggles. The singer noted improvements over time, acknowledging that his discomfort was severe during his twenties and thirties but has gradually lessened as he’s aged.
Williams has received three separate ADHD diagnoses throughout his life, with the first occurring around 2006. During the podcast, he mentioned taking medication for his condition and continuing to search for answers about his mental health challenges.
The father of four, who shares children with wife Ayda Field, also revealed that he recently completed an online autism assessment. While the test indicated he doesn’t meet the full criteria for autism, Williams explained he possesses autistic traits, particularly around social interaction.
Williams’ disclosure adds his voice to a growing number of public figures speaking openly about Tourette syndrome and mental health challenges. Fellow musician Lewis Capaldi previously took a hiatus from performing after his Tourette’s tics prevented him from completing his Glastonbury performance in 2023. By sharing his experience, Williams contributes to broader conversations about neurodevelopmental disorders and the importance of mental health awareness.

The revelation comes as Williams continues his Britpop tour, which began in May. Despite decades of performing before massive audiences, the singer admitted harboring deep anxieties about live performances, describing himself as terrified rather than excited about touring. His ability to mask these feelings, he noted, requires Olympic-level effort.
As Williams seeks further professional evaluation and continues navigating his diagnosis, his openness provides valuable insight into living with Tourette syndrome and the various ways it can manifest in individuals’ lives.
