Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to leave Congress in January after Trump feud escalates – Socialite Life

Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Friday (November 21, 2025) evening that she will resign from Congress, marking the end of a turbulent five-year career in Washington after a dramatic public break with President Donald Trump.

Greene, who was once considered one of Trump’s most loyal allies on Capitol Hill, stated that her last day in office will be January 5, 2026. The announcement came just days after the president publicly called her a “traitor” and withdrew his endorsement amid escalating tensions over the release of documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“I’m very sad for our country but so happy for my friend Marjorie,” Republican Rep. Thomas Massie wrote on X. The decision to step down caps a remarkable reversal for Greene, who built her political career on unwavering support for the former president and his MAGA movement.

The conflict between Greene and Trump intensified in recent weeks as the Georgia Republican joined a bipartisan effort to force the Justice Department to release all files related to Epstein investigations. Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Greene defended her position. “I was called a traitor by a man that I fought for five, no, actually, six years for, and I gave him my loyalty for free,” she said. “I won my first election without his endorsement, beating eight men in a primary, and I’ve never owed him anything.”

Trump, meanwhile, dismissed Greene’s concerns on Truth Social, stating that she “went BAD” and claiming her departure was due to “PLUMMETING Poll Numbers.” The president wrote Saturday, “Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country.”

The breaking point centered on the Epstein files, with Greene becoming one of four House Republicans to support a discharge petition forcing a floor vote on their release. Despite initial White House opposition, the House ultimately voted this week to compel the Justice Department to release the documents after Trump reversed his position.

Beyond the Epstein controversy, Greene had increasingly criticized Trump’s policies in recent months. She challenged his foreign policy approach, particularly regarding military aid to Israel and Ukraine, arguing that the administration should prioritize domestic issues. During a CNN interview, Greene described certain policies as “not America first positions” and expressed frustration with what she perceived as excessive presidential travel abroad.

The congresswoman also reported receiving threats and harassment following Trump’s public attacks. “I am now being contacted by private security firms with warnings for my safety as a hot bed of threats against me are being fueled and egged on by the most powerful man in the world,” Greene wrote on X. She later reported hoax pizza deliveries to her home and a pipe bomb threat at her family’s construction company office.

In her resignation statement, Greene acknowledged that she had “always been despised in Washington DC” and said she believes in term limits. “My only goal and desire has ever been to hold the Republican Party accountable for the promises it makes to the American people and put America First,” she stated.

Greene’s departure from Congress will trigger a special election in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, which is rated as “Solid Republican” by political analysts. Local GOP leadership in northwest Georgia has stood by the congresswoman despite the national controversy.

Trump responded to Greene’s resignation announcement by calling it “great news for the country” in an interview with ABC News. The president’s dismissive stance marks a complete turnaround from his earlier support, when he once called her “a real WINNER.”

During her tenure, Greene wielded significant influence as a member of the House Freedom Caucus, though she was later removed from the group following internal conflicts. She was also publicly condemned for violent rhetoric and stripped of her committee assignments by Democrats in 2021, only to be reinstated when Republicans regained control of the House.

Political observers note that Greene’s resignation could position her for a future presidential run in 2028, potentially as a leader of the MAGA movement after Trump leaves political life. However, she has previously dismissed such speculation.

The split between Trump and Greene represents a significant fracture within the Republican Party and raises questions about the future direction of the conservative movement. As one political strategist noted, “The big discussion we’re going to be having as Republicans over the next three years is, what is the Republican movement once it’s not Trump?”

Greene’s final weeks in office are expected to be marked by continued advocacy for the issues she championed, including transparency around the Epstein files and accountability within her own party.
