Rams HC Sean McVay Delivers Update on Kyren Williams’ Contract Situation As RB Attends OTAs

Kyren Williams is entering the final year of his rookie contract. This has led some to wonder if he and the Los Angeles Rams could agree to terms on a long-term extension ahead of the 2025 season. Rams head coach Sean McVay weighed in on the contract situation for the team’s Pro Bowl running back.

Sean McVay Offers Optimism on Williams’ Contract Talks

McVay noted that the discussions have been “really healthy” and there has been “positive progress, for sure” on a potential extension.

Williams will turn 25 in August, just ahead of the start of the 2025 NFL season. He’s coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his two years as the Rams’ starter.

In 2024, Williams carried the ball 316 times for 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also added 34 receptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver. His rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns, rushing yards and receptions were all career highs.

The Rams selected Williams in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. After spending his rookie year as a backup to Cam Akers, Williams took over as the starter in 2023 and hasn’t looked back.

Rams’ Depth Behind Williams Adds Intrigue

Los Angeles picked Blake Corum from Michigan in the third round of the 2024 draft. Some thought he might be the future of the backfield. But Williams maintained a stronghold on the position in 2024, and these contract talks suggest the Rams see him as the long-term starter.

The team also added Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Auburn. Hunter seems likely to fill a depth role behind Williams in the offense.

Williams and the Rams lost 28-22 in the NFC Divisional Round, a tight game against the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Rams gave the Eagles their closest game of the playoffs and are projected to be one of the top contenders in the NFC again this year.

Extension talks between Williams and the Rams will be worth watching as the season gets closer. With another playoff push in sight, keeping Williams locked in would be a big move for the Rams.
