Pope Leo XIV offers message of unity for polarized Catholic Church as pontificate officially starts

The Vatican City (AP) – Pope Liu XIV pledged on Sunday to work for unity in the polarized Catholic Church and the world, as the first American door for history, he presented a message of recovery during the opening bloc in St. Peter’s Square before estimated about 200,000 pilgrims, the heroine, the patriarchs and princes.

Liu was officially opened for him by carrying out the first round of Bouboopille through the square, which has become a synonym for the global access of the Babylu and the middle clouds. The 69 -year -old missionaries smiled and waved from the back of the truck to the people who waved us, Peruvian and other national flags, and Mubarak stopped some children in the crowd.

During the block, Leo looked suffocating when he put the strong symbols of the Papua-stealing the lambsol on his shoulders and the hunter’s ring on his finger-as if the weight of a leadership church was 1.4 billion from the church had just drowned.

His hand turned to look at the ring, then refine his hands in front of him during prayer.

US Vice President JD Vance, one of the last foreign officials who saw Pope Francis before his death, led the American delegation to honor Leo born in Chicago. Vans pushed his respect in the grave of Francis after arriving in Rome late on Saturday.

The subject of the papacy Leo

In his sermon, Liu said he wanted to be a servant for believers through two dimensions of papal, love and loneliness, so that the Church is a power of peace in the world.

He said: “I would like to be the first great desire for a unified church, which is a sign of unity and communication, which becomes a yeast for the world of interests.” “In this time, we still see a lot of disagreement, and a lot of wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, fear of difference and the economic model that exploits the land resources and the poorest.

His words chanted some of the main priorities of Francis, but his call to unity was great, given the polarization in the Catholic Church in the United States and beyond.

Francis Radical Radical for 12 years, who emphasized the care of the poor and the marginalized, and the contempt of the capitalist economic system, and often alienate conservatives who have begun to the new Pope that can calm the divisions. Liu’s elections appear on May 8, after it was possible that conservative Catholics seemed to be appreciated by his most disciplined style, traditional background and Augustine’s background, with a focus on the basic facts of the Catholic doctrine.

Liu led that message to the house by wearing the official red head of Babia, or Mozita, to receive the official government delegations after the mass. Francis has avoided many formal measures of the Babylon as part of his simple style, but Liu’s return to traditional ribbons stole the conservatives and traditionalists, who breathe further when it came in first place.

But Liu broke a protocol when he gave his older brother, Luis Priestte, “Maga Maga”, a bear hug in Bazilica when he and his wife came to salute the Pope.

Liu said: “Let’s build a church founded on the love of God, a sign of unity, which is a missionary church that opens its arms to the world, declaring the word, allowing itself to anxiety with history, and becomes a yeast of harmony for humanity.”

Narrow security and protocol

The strict diplomatic protocol dictates the arrangements for sitting in the opening block, where both the United States and Peru obtained a front -class seats thanks to Leo’s dual nationality. Vans, an author of the Catholic who was intertwined with Francis on plans to deport the mass immigrants in the Trump administration, joined US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who arrived in Rome early to try to strengthen Russian-Ukraine peace talks.

Peruvian President Dina Polant was one of about ten heads of state who attended, as well as Ukrainian President Folodimir Zelinski. Reports said that Russia had planned to send the Minister of Culture to it, but it represented its ambassador.

The diplomatic protocol dictates the bases of dress: while most of them wore black, a handful of the Catholic royal family – the Queen of Lezia from Spain and Princess Charlin from Monaco, from among others – wore white in a special privilege. Thirteen Christian churches in the world sent actors, and the Jewish community had a delegation of 13 members, half of them rabbis. Other actors chaired by Buddhist, Muslim, Zoroastrian, Hinduism, Sikhs and Jin.

Security was narrow, as was the case for Francis’s funeral on April 26, which attracted an estimated 250,000 people. The Vatican said that 200,000 were at hand on Sunday in the square, the surrounding streets, gardens and piasa, where giant television and toilets were created.

At the end of the mass, Liu expressed his hope for negotiations to bring a “fair and permanent peace” in Ukraine and offered prayers to the people of Gaza – children, families and the elderly “they were reduced to hunger.” Liu did not mention the hostages that Hamas took from southern Israel on October 7, 2023, as Francis usually did when praying for Gaza.

Zelenskyy later had an official audience with Liu in the Vatican, then met Fase and Rubio at the residence in the United States in Rome. In a post on X, Zelenskyy said that he stressed the need for “a complete and unconditional shooting as soon as possible” and for diplomatic pressures on Russia “to eager to stop the war.”

The Americans rejoice

Susan Hansen, a professor who was born in Chicago and has just reached Rome to teach, said she believed that Leo’s sermon on unity would resonate in the United States and beyond.

After the mass, she said: “I think it will inspire, what I loved in particular is the formulation and unity in the doctrine of faith, then in love.”

Ethan Mining, 21, from Omaha, Nebraska, concluded that in an American flag, it was purchased at a truck station in Iowa, to celebrate.

He said: “Rome has always felt that she was at home for Catholic, but she now comes here and seeing one of Peter’s throne … Jesus makes himself easier.”

The symbols of the Babawa that delivered to Liu were the balcony stole and the hunter ring. The balm, who wraps through his shoulders, symbolizes the priest who carries its flock while carrying the believers. The ring, which becomes the official seal of Liu, returns to Jesus’ invitation to the Messenger Peter to throw his fishing networks.

Gregory and Susan Hodak, who lived for 40 years in the Chicago region, found themselves in Rome after reserving a trip in February, with a faint hope to take a look at the Pope. Gary Hodak, a former altar wearing a hat in Chicago Beers, said that seeing the bobille corridor in front of them, with Liu on the plane, was better than watching Michael Jordan Play.

“Originally, it was the only hope I had here was to see the inner part of the Sistine Church,” he said. “The date of seeing the Pope was not determined, it was a long hope. This was a treasure, simple for it.”
