Mogadishu, Somalia — A passenger plane carrying 55 people veered off the runway of Somalia’s main airport and ended up in shallow water on a nearby beach on Tuesday during an emergency landing after a technical problem occurred shortly after take-off.
Ahmed Noor, CEO of the airline, said in a statement that there were no casualties as a result of the emergency landing at Aden Abdullah International Airport in Mogadishu, and the 50 passengers and 5 crew members on board the Starsky Airlines flight were evacuated safely.
Nour said that “the plane overshot the runway” before coming to rest on the shore of the Indian Ocean near the airport, adding that “there were no injuries or deaths.”
Transport Minister Mohamed Farah Nouh said that the rescue team was able to identify everyone on board the plane, and that only the plane was damaged. He added that the cause of the accident will be fully investigated.
Ahmed Maalim, director of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, told local media that the flight was heading to the northern city of Galkayo when it encountered a problem about 15 minutes after take-off. The teacher added that while trying to land, the plane deviated from the runway and ended up on the beach.
