Pilot program brings Waymo autonomous cars to SFO

San Francisco (Kron) – Travelers and tourists in the Gulf region may have a new option to reach San Francisco International Airport (SFO). On Tuesday, Mayor Daniel Lori announced that a newly signed experimental permit would allow Waymo to start testing independent vehicles at the airport.

Waymo operations permit at the airport will be launched in three stages. In the first stage, Waymo vehicles will be tested in an independent position with a human driver behind the steering wheel. The mayor’s office said that the second stage will remove the human driver from independent vehicles, but horse riding will only be open to Waymo and “appointed airport employees”.

In the third stage of the pilot, Waymo will open its commercial operations to push customers as a roll.

“We have tourists from all over the world who want to try our independent cars, and soon they will have this opportunity from right when they land at our great airport,” Lori said in a Tuesday announcement.

Waymo, its headquarters in Mountain View, began, SFO Road Maps in March, when Mayor Lori agreed to a temporary arrival agreement with the company.

No timetable has been issued for the full offering by officials, but Lori indicated that the audience will be updated “every step on the road.”

Earlier this month, San Jose Minitta International Airport (SJC) announced that Waymo has received business permission to work at its airport. There was no official launch date for South Bay airport, but airport officials said it would be “later this year.”
