Paula Badosa Shares Worrying Injury Update Days Before Title Defense at Citi DC Open

Ahead of her title defense at the 2025 Citi DC Open, Paula Badosa provided a concerning update regarding her health. The Spaniard has been grappling with a recurring back injury for some time, which has prompted her to withdraw from several tournaments over the past few years.

Badosa’s most recent withdrawal came during the 2025 Berlin Tennis Open. She was seeded eighth at the tournament and began her campaign by defeating Eva Lys 6-1, 6-3, and Emma Navarro 7-6(2), 6-3 in the first and second rounds, respectively.

In the quarterfinals, the Spaniard faced a qualifier and eventual runner-up, Wang Xinyu, but was forced to retire before the second set due to discomfort and pain in her lower back.

The 2025 Citi DC Open will be held from Jul. 21 to Jul. 27, 2025, at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. Badosa is expected to defend her title at this tournament, which she won in 2024 by defeating Marie Bouzková in the final.

However, ahead of the WTA 500 hard-court tournament in Washington, Badosa took to social media and revealed that she has been dealing with a tear in her psoas muscle in the lower back region since the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.

“Hi everyone, Been disconnected for a while but wanted to update you on my situation right now. I’ve been going through some tough moments lately… Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with a tear on my psoas since before Wimbledon, and it’s going to keep me out of competition for a few weeks…” Badosa wrote on her Instagram story.

The Spaniard mentioned that this injury will sideline her from the Tour for several weeks; however, she has not yet made an official announcement regarding her participation in the Citi DC Open. She expressed that she is going through “challenging times” but is optimistic about her recovery.

“These are really challenging times for me, but I’m staying hopeful that things will turn around soon and the light at the end of the tunnel will start to shine through. Thank you all for the immense support, P,” she added.
