It has been a rough few months to be a Dallas Mavericks fan. An unbelievable and unexplainable trade sent franchise icon and fan favorite Luka Dončić packing to the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving the entire fanbase fuming. The pretence of winning immediately quickly became a fever dream, with virtually every starter missing time due to injury.
For the entire fanbase, some semblance of hope was a necessity. Thankfully, that arrived in the form of the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. One of the most loaded classes in recent memory is led far and away by Cooper Flagg. It has immediately revitalized the fanbase and turned lifelong fan Patrick Mahomes back into a believer.
Patrick Mahomes Overjoyed Over Dallas Mavericks
For the Mavericks, watching the entire team fall apart less than a full season removed from an NBA Finals appearance had to be heartbreaking for the entire fanbase. However, landing Cooper Flagg might breathe new life into the fanbase.
Flagg was one of the best recruits in recent college basketball history, and his performance at Duke somehow increased the hype tenfold. Drafting him has potentially set Dallas up for success both in the short and long term, thanks to the talent available on the team.
And it finally brought a reaction out of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and an all-time great in Patrick Mahomes. “OMGGGGG!! Let’s go!!!!!” Mahomes wrote on X. A Texas native, the three-time Super Bowl Champion has been a huge fan of the team.

A regular attendee at their home games, he had a special connection with Dončić in particular. When the trade was first announced, the two-time MVP even had a series of tweets where his shock and then “I’m sick rn….” were messages clear as day.
After the trade, Mahomes even expressed his shock, going so far as to say that he was hurt by the situation. “Luka is such a franchise player. I know it hurt my heart as a Mavs fan, but I’m excited for the future and having Anthony Davis.
“It definitely hurts more than anything knowing Luka and the work that he put in and the time he’s put in in Dallas and the city and how he’s done so much for it. That’s been the thing that’s hurt me the most.”
But, Mahomes and the Mavericks now have their potential star of the future in the form of Flagg, who is a three-level scorer with Defensive Player of the Year potential. For the Blue Devils this past year, he won the ACC Rookie of the Year as well as Player of the Year.
His legendary run also saw him lead the entire team in all five major statistical categories, with 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 steals and blocks apiece. Add in the efficiency (48.1% from the field and 38.5% from 3-point range), and the 6-foot-9 forward has virtually no holes in his game.
With the ideal mentor in the form of Anthony Davis already on the squad, Dallas has the perfect opportunity to build right back up into a contender.
