DENVER (KDVR) — More than 70 flights were canceled at Denver International Airport Friday morning after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered several major markets to reduce air traffic control.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that 40 major markets will have to reduce operations after the government shutdown caused burnout and staff shortages among air traffic controllers, who have been without pay since Oct. 1.
The FAA said these markets will have to reduce air traffic control by 10%, with a 4% reduction starting Friday, then a 6% reduction by November 11, an 8% reduction by November 13, and a 10% reduction by November 14.
On Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration released the list, and DIA was among the airports asked to cut off flights. Now, DIA may be starting to see the effects.
Flights canceled at Doha International Airport on Friday
FlightwareThe direct flight tracking website said that 74 flights had been canceled as of Friday morning, while 119 flights had been postponed. The majority of cancellations came from SkyWest, with 36 cancellations. South West has 20 cancellations and United has 10. Frontier has six cancellations, while Delta Air Lines has two.
United said it had already begun making the cuts through Sunday, eliminating 4% per day as directed by the Federal Aviation Administration. While it is unclear whether all of these canceled flights on Friday were part of the FAA’s flight reductions, the DIA is expected to reduce flights by 4% on Friday.
