SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — There are no ICE operations planned surrounding Super Bowl week in the Bay Area, officials said, as NFL leaders and law enforcement officials held a news conference on Tuesday.
Some of the Bay Area’s top law enforcement leaders gathered Tuesday to wrap up 18 months of planning to keep Super Bowl weekend safe.

Several immigrant rights groups organized a march to make clear that ICE is not welcome in the Bay Area. This, while another group expressed its support.
“The Super Bowl is once again rated a SEAR 1 event, the second-highest security rating for a major special event,” said Cathy Lanier, NFL Chief of Security.
This designation means that NFL security departments and local police receive additional support from federal law enforcement.
“In the coming days, there will be a significant increase in federal personnel, including federal law enforcement, throughout the region,” said Jeff Brannigan, DHS’s chief federal coordinator. “These professionals are here for the specific and strict purpose of directly supporting Super Bowl-related security plans in the cities of Santa Clara, San Francisco and San Jose.”
Although they did not go into detail about all of the operations they conduct, Lanier said that ICE operations are not unexpected and that this DHS partnership is normal.

“There are no law enforcement activities planned, we are confident of that,” Lanier said. “Secondly, our Department of Homeland Security, which has been our partner for over 20 years, is made up of over 20 different departments.”
Local law enforcement — including police departments in Santa Clara, San Francisco and San Jose — were also present at Tuesday’s news conference.
Each says they have a comprehensive public safety plan that addresses a wide range of scenarios.
They urge everyone in the community to report anything suspicious.
“We are asking the public to help us,” said Corey Morgan, Chief of the Santa Clara Police Department. “If you see something, say something. I’m excited for Sunday. It’s going to be a beautiful day in Santa Clara, and we’re ready.”
