More than 55,000 pounds of frozen blueberries voluntarily recalled due to possible listeria contamination

Frozen blueberries distributed in four states have been voluntarily recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

Oregon Potato Company, which owns Willamette Valley Fruit and is based in Salem, Oregon, voluntarily recalled 55,689 pounds of frozen blueberries on Feb. 12 due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to a report from Oregon Potato Company. The recall was classified as a category I remember on February 24, which is the highest level of the FDA classificationindicating that “use of or exposure to the affected product” could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The voluntary recall affects blueberries distributed in Michigan, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin, in addition to Canada, the FDA report said.

The product was not sold to consumers from retail stores, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

The recalled berries were packed into 30-pound corrugated boxes and 1,400-pound bags of individually frozen blueberries.

The company did not issue a public press release regarding the recall. Willamette Valley Fruit Company did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.

What do you know about listeria and its symptoms?

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause an infection known as listeriosis when ingested Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The agency says this condition is most dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, people with weakened immune systems and adults 65 or older. For pregnant people, listeria infection can lead to pregnancy loss or premature birth.

According to Center for Disease ControlAn estimated 1,250 people become infected with listeriosis each year in the United States, and about 172 people die from it.
