Marin County could ban certain e-bikes for riders under 16

San Rafael, California (Crohn)-Marine County leaders will think on Tuesday about banning children from riding certain types of electronic cycles. Supporters of this measure raises concerns about safety.

The State Assembly law provides 1778 local governments to place restrictions on electronic bicycles “Category 2”. These e -bikes, which are stifling, can go with a maximum of 20 miles per hour. On Tuesday, the Marine County Council will consider hitting the brakes in this style of transportation for children.

If approved, the decree will prevent children under 16 years of age from riding a 2 -year -old e -bike in Marin Province. It will also make helmets mandatory on electronic bicycles.

Public health in Marin Province sent a safety alert in 2023 after a big jump in 911 calls that included children who collide with electronic bicycles and are seriously harmful. The administration said that the risk of children between the ages of 10 and 15 years is five times higher than other age groups.

The province launches a safety campaign in May to warn young people and their parents about the high accidents.

“I think there is not enough education for buyers on electronic bicycles and how to use them safely,” said Urban Carmel, Marin Transport Commissioner. “We are constantly facing this problem in Mill Valley.”

Mary Sakt, the supervisor of Marin Province, which has prompted to increase the measures of electronic cycling safety since the Ministry of Health alerted in November 2023, encourages families to choose electronic bikes for unit 1, which does not have a pedal, for young passengers.

“Electronic bicycles enable the bicycles to travel further distances and settle the Marin hills,” said Sakt. “We want people to ride electronic bicycles safely. This decree provides clarity: You should not be young contestants under the age of 16 on electronic bicycles working in suffocating.”
