Man shot, killed by Secret Service, local deputy outside of Mar-a-Lago, agency says

PALM BEACH, FLORIDA — A man was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents early Sunday morning outside President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, according to the Secret Service.

“On February 22, at approximately 1:30 a.m., U.S. Secret Service agents shot a man in his early 20s and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) deputy after an unauthorized entry into the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago,” a Secret Service spokesperson said in a statement.

The statement continued: “The person, whose identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead. The person was spotted at the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property carrying what appeared to be a rifle and a fuel can.”

The statement said President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident, and no “Secret Service protectees” were present.

The statement continued, “U.S. Secret Service agents and a Peacebuilding Support Office deputy confronted this individual and law enforcement forces fired shots during the confrontation,” adding that “no Secret Service or Peacebuilding Support Office personnel were harmed.”

The statement said the incident is being investigated by the Secret Service and the FBI.
