Long Beach cancels annual Día de los Muertos Parade over fears of ICE operations

The city of Long Beach has canceled the procession of Dia de Los Mairter for this year, noting concerns about federal immigration operations that raised concerns among members of society.

Mary Zendgas, a member of the first boycott council, requested the cancellation of the cancellation, he told city officials KTLA during the weekend. Although there is no indication that federal authorities planned to target the event, officials said that holding such a large public gathering may create concern for residents who may fear sudden enforcement procedures.

“This decision did not come slightly,” the city said, adding that it was made “out of abundance of caution to address the real fears raised by members of society, especially those who may face the possibility of sudden and compact enforcement procedures that undermine the sense of safety necessary to fully participate in public life.”

The city’s sponsored offer, which directs large crowds, will return to Long Beach, in 2026. The financing will be set for this year to the budget of next year, giving the organizers $ 100,000 to expand the celebration.

The ARTE Y Festival, a separate event with tickets hosted by an external seller usually coincides with the show, will not also take place this year.

City officials confirmed their commitment to cultural events that celebrate the diversity of Long Beach. “We look forward to continuing the Dia de Los Moerus procession next year,” the statement said.

Long Beach also urges the residents to communicate with local resources that support migrant communities, including the Long Beach Justice box. Services range from legal assistance and housing assistance to mental health support.
