A live-action cinematic adaptation of My Little Pony is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro Entertainment. Notably, My Little Pony is a franchise that originated as a toy line in the early ’80s and has since expanded into animated TV shows and movies.
Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro to develop live-action My Little Pony movie
Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro Entertainment are developing a live-action big-screen project based on My Little Pony. Jeff Sneider originally broke the news on the matter, and it was later confirmed by Variety.
If the movie happens, it will be the first live-action project in the IP’s over four-decades-long history. Hasbro initially released a pony figurine called My Pretty Pony. Created by illustrator Bonnie Zacherle and sculptor Charles Muenchinger, the figurine wasn’t relatively successful, prompting Hasbro to release smaller and colorful versions later under the title My Little Pony. Several animated projects, including My Little Pony: Escape from Catrina and My Little Pony: The Movie, came out throughout the decade.
In the following years, Hasbro has released several incarnations of the toy line. The most recent among them is My Little Pony: A New Generation, the Generation Five toy line that debuted in 2021.
Although the franchise was initially geared toward girls, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which debuted in 2010, expanded its fan base into young and adult male demographics. Notably, the series aired for nine seasons between 2010 and 2019. A standalone spin-off to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, titled My Little Pony: Pony Life, ran on TV between 2020 and 2021. Another spin-off, My Little Pony: Make Your Mark, premiered on Netflix in May 2022. It aired for 27 episodes before concluding in November 2023.
At the time of this article’s composition, Amazon MGM and Hasbro haven’t announced either the creative team for the project or its release date.
