Latest on Jets QB After Exiting Week 2 Game vs. Bills

The honeymoon period for Justin Fields may have lasted just one week with the New York Jets. Despite losing to their former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, there were quite a few positives for head coach Aaron Glenn to take from the game. Unfortunately, all that may have been for naught, going against a legitimate AFC contender in the Buffalo Bills.

Through three quarters, there has been almost nothing for the Jets to take away that they can be happy about. The most alarming sign for New York, getting crushed on both sides of the football field, was the play from their new quarterback.

What Happened To Justin Fields?

After failed stints with the Chicago Bears, who drafted him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he lasted just one year, the Jets took a swing on Fields as they tried to get out from under the Rodgers business.

In Week 1, it looked like their gamble had paid off. Completing 16 of his 22 passing attempts, Fields tallied 218 yards and a touchdown through the air. Simultaneously, he was electric on the ground, adding 48 yards on 12 carries, while getting into the end zone twice.

A nail-biting 34-32 loss felt like an acceptable result. But all that goodwill might have gone down the drain in just three quarters. Completing just three of his nine passing attempts, Fields had 27 passing yards to his name.

Even though he was better on the ground with 49 yards on five carries, it was far from enough for a New York team that was trailing 23-3. Unfortunately, an elite defense wasn’t an excuse, as the Bills finished middle-of-the-pack last year.

This year, too, they gave up 40 points to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, far from the stifling unit they’ve looked like against the Jets. In his fifth season, it might be time to admit the truth about their quarterback.

Entering the fourth quarter, the situation went from bad to worse for New York. Taking a massive blow to the head, Fields was suspected to have a concussion and was immediately taken to the medical blue tent.

Rich Cimini of ESPN reported, “Fields now being evaluated for a possible concussion. Helmet hit the turf hard. #Jets” For a fan base that was looking to turn the corner on Rodgers and their cursed history, Week 2 might be the worst-case scenario that they could have expected.

He then went to the locker room for further evaluation.
