Massive News for Colts QB Anthony Richardson Amid Daniel Jones Battle

After suffering a right shoulder injury during the start of OTAs, ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported that Richardson has recovered and is prepared to report to training camp next week.

This offseason, the Colts signed former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to a one-year, $14 million deal to compete with Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, for the starting quarterback job.

Jones had an up-and-down career as the Giants’ signal-caller, and so far, Richardson hasn’t exactly panned out for the Colts.

Coming into the NFL, he was a raw prospect, but he had eye-popping athleticism.

However, he’s already dealt with numerous injuries, including a concussion in Week 2 of his rookie season, an AC joint injury in Week 5 of his rookie season that knocked him out for the season, and more.

Last season, Richardson was benched after he took himself out of the game. He cited fatigue as the reason for pulling himself out.

Not only did he do that, but over the course of 11 games, he completed just 47.7% of his passes on 264 attempts and threw eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Through 15 career starts, his completion percentage is barely above 50%.

Now, this offseason, Richardson suffered another injury to his throwing shoulder at the start of OTAs.

While this may have conjured the thought of “here we go again,” he is set to be back on the field and duke it out with Jones for the starting job.

Richardson has struggled mightily in the passing game, but his sensational running has helped him remain on the field.

He’s had 111 career carries and has 635 yards and 10 touchdowns. Not only that, but he has one of the strongest arms in the league. The problem is that, once he uncorks a pass, it’s anyone’s guess where it may end up.

On the other hand, there are some throws that maybe only he and a handful of other quarterbacks can make.

This news of Richardson recovering is great news, though, as these signal-callers will compete and bring out the best in one another.

The Colts’ medical staff believed that rest for Richardson would help the problem, and that “prescription” appears to be holding true.

We’ll see what happens. According to Holder, Colts head coach Shane Steichen has been adamant that the most consistent player will get the starting job.
