McCullers Jr. was chosen as a first-round pick by the Astros in 2012. He made his professional debut in 2015 after impressing in the minor leagues. The RHP showcased real promise in the beginning stretch of his career, but injuries started to plague him after three full seasons with the Astros in the big leagues.
Lance McCullers Jr.’s Career With the Houston Astros Has Been Full of Ups and Downs
McCullers Jr.’s injuries restricted his playing time on the mound considerably, and he has missed three complete seasons in the past decade. He pitched for the first time in the 2025 season since last pitching in the 2022 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Despite being a two-time World Series champion and an All-Star, he has been subpar with his performances in recent campaigns. McCullers Jr. is currently 0-1 for the campaign with an ERA of 5.89, 26 strikeouts, and a 1.69 WHIP. He did not register a conclusive result in the series finale against the A’s and will be aiming to register a win in his next start.
He will be making his next start in the series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on June 3.
