After his retirement from the UFC, Nurmagomedov stepped into his father’s shoes. He became the coach and mentor of the Dagestani camp of UFC fighters, including Islam Makhachev and his cousins, Umar and Usman Nurmagomedov.

One of Nurmagomedov’s Instagram Stories showcased that he had recently had surgery. He shared a photo of a digital reading that said he covered a distance of 3.20 miles and burned 406 calories. The former UFC star did not reveal why he had to undergo the surgery. It could potentially be an injury he suffered while training his students or teammates, but no statement has been made yet.

Nurmagomedov went through multiple surgeries during his decorated UFC career. At one point, the procedures frustrated him to the point where he wanted to quit fighting even before he became the 155-pound champion.

In 2024, he said on the “Inspire Me Podcast” that after two ACL and one back surgery, he was ready to give up on his dreams. His father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, changed his mind.

“It was a very hard time, and I remember I was talking with my father, ‘Maybe this is a signal from God you have to stop.’ He told me, ‘You cannot give up. When you have a test, you have to show your toughness if you’re tough. If you’re not tough, you can just give up, and that’s it.’”
