'It smells like democracy': Jeffco's 'I Voted' stickers get a nostalgic twist

DENVER (KDVR) — Voters in Jefferson County will be able to smell democracy and maybe even a little nostalgia this Election Day.

Historically, the “I Voted” sticker has been a staple on Election Day, which voters can wear after casting their ballot. The Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder’s Office said the county will be no different, as they will continue to provide “I Voted” stickers to voters on Election Day, Nov. 4.

However, the county’s “I Voted” stickers will have a fun feature – scratch and sniff.

“The I Voted sticker has always been a symbol of civic pride, but there’s also some nostalgia that many voters remember from their childhood, voting with a parent,” Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Amanda Gonzalez told FOX31. “Scratch ‘n’ sniff stickers have the same sense of nostalgia and fun, and we thought it would be a great opportunity to combine the two and bring that joy to voting.”

Scratch-and-sniff posters show a ballot drop box in the county alongside a cluster of wildfires in Colorado. The community even voted from a selection of scented options to see which one “most resembled democracy,” the Office of the Clerk and Recorder said.

“Voting should be something people look forward to. A ‘scratch and sniff’ sticker adds a bit of fun and celebration to the process – it’s a simple way to make civic engagement feel special. If it gets more people to vote, so much the better,” Gonzalez said.

The stickers are only available in person at the county’s seven polling places, which will open in phases starting Oct. 27, according to the Clerk and Recorder’s Office. However, county voters who mailed in their ballots can still stop in for a scratch-off sticker if they want.

“It reeks of democracy,” Gonzalez said.

The deadline for all ballots or voting is 7pm on November 4th. For more information about polls or voting locations, click here.
