Indianapolis – Alex Palao has become the first driver from Spain to win Indianapolis 500 by sticking to his former colleague in the Chip Ganassi Marcus Ericsson on the closing lamps on Sunday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road.
Palo, who won three indycar titles in four years – including the last two, came to a motorcycle race with four wins during the first five races this season. But it was No. 6, the “greatest scene in the race”, which was about his calendar.
Without Indie 500, Palo said his CV will never be completed.
Palu stopped the car outside the brick square, climbing it and losing its balance almost as it raises its arms in a victory. He jumped down and went on to run forward, pulled his gloves and threw behind him.
Scott Dixon gave him a great hug, as well as Dario Franchiti, where Ganassi Indy 500 welcomes Palou winner at the exclusive club.
“I cannot believe it. What a wonderful day. What amazing race.” Palo said. “I can’t believe it. It was difficult. The difficult circumstances there, especially if you are like, the third or the fourth in the package. And even driving, fuel consumption was very high, so they didn’t want me to lead. I wanted to lead, frankly, so yes, it happened.”
