‘If You Can’t Stop It, Keep Running It’ – Josh Allen Sounds Off on NFL’s Failed Attempt To Ban Eagles’ Tush Push Play

Buffalo Bills quarterback and 2024 NFL MVP Josh Allen recently gave his take on the ‘Tush Push’ during a recent interview. The Bills are perhaps the team that utilizes the play more than any other, besides the Philadelphia Eagles. When asked about the controversial maneuver, the quarterback shared his straightforward opinion.

Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen Speaks Out On Failed Attempt To Ban the Tush Push

Allen touched on several topics during a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, including past and present teammates, his MVP season, and the ‘Tush Push’. When asked for his thoughts on the latter, the quarterback gave a considered response.

“I’m a big believer in if you can’t stop it, keep running it, right? I think that there’s a few teams that do it better than others, but then you look at a few teams that try to do it, and it doesn’t have the same success. Because, one, they maybe don’t practice it enough or, two, they don’t have the guys to do it.”

Allen continued, defending his reasoning: “And just because a couple teams do it better than others, I don’t feel like it should be banned. I understand the merit of what it brings, and so I don’t really sway one way or the other. I try to play the game based on the interpretation of the rules.”

“And if that was the rule that was passed, you know, we’ll find a different way. But I feel like if you can use it to your benefit, use it to your benefit. If you don’t like it, my advice is to stop it, you know?”

Allen Disagrees With Buffalo About Tush Push Ban

Perhaps controversially, Allen’s comments seem to contradict his team’s view on the play. The vote to ban the ‘Tush Push’ fell two votes short of the necessary 24, with all 10 teams that voted to keep the play quickly named.

Buffalo’s name did not appear on that list, despite its star quarterback’s apparent support for the play. Allen regularly used his big frame last season, making the Bills a surprise supporter of the ban.

Of the 10 teams that voted against, only the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints joined Philadelphia from the NFC. The Saints hired former Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to be their head coach this offseason, after he benefited massively from the ‘Tush Push’ in 2024. Meanwhile, the Lions have a tough, no-nonsense brand to protect, forcing them to vote in favor of the physical, old-school play.

While safe in the AFC, the Bills face the Eagles in a potentially crucial week 17 showdown in December. With both teams also among the Super Bowl favorites in 2025, they could realistically face each other again in February. It’s possible, perhaps even likely, that the Bills were just looking out for their own interests in that very scenario.
