We’ve seen it happen time after time. A stranger runs onto the porch and snatches a just-delivered package and it only takes seconds.
Theft definitely spikes during the holidays. In fact, one in four Americans has had a package stolen.
Experts say that most thefts occur between noon and 6 p.m., when most people are at work. If you’re expecting a package and won’t be coming home, there are several things you can do to avoid becoming a victim of so-called “porch pirates.”
Set up delivery alerts so you know exactly when your package is delivered. This way you can ask one of your neighbors to take it for you right away. You can also arrange for packages to be delivered to someone else you trust who is home during the day.
If none of these options are possible, you can have the postal service hold your mail until you can stop by to pick it up.
There are also things you can purchase to help keep your packages safe.
Some people turn to lock boxes or boxes that you install on your porch. Delivery drivers simply place packages there — and out of the way of potential thieves — so you can bring them safely inside.
Many people also have doorbell cameras to record what is happening. That way, if you become a victim, the footage can potentially help authorities catch suspects.
And it’s not just “porch pirates” trying to make a profit this holiday season. And so do cyber criminals. Some leave a note on your door saying the package cannot be delivered. Others send you a text or email.
In all cases, this is a trick to get you to reveal sensitive personal information.
Even if notes or emails seem legitimate, don’t call a phone number or click on a link. Instead, go to the company’s actual website and look for the official customer service number.
