The Pro Football Hall of Fame is one of the most illustrious groups in all of sports. While each sport typically tends to have its own Hall of Fame to honor some of the game’s greatest, the football version is especially famous for its rigorous criteria and selection process.

Established in September of 1963, it is the ultimate honor for not only players, but also coaches, officials, owners, and front office personnel. Located in Canton, Ohio, it currently holds 382 members, with new inductees joining the list every year. What Are the Eligibility Rules for the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

A Hall of Fame bid is the highest accolade for a player’s career in the NFL. However, their contributions across other leagues, such as the AFL and CFL, are also taken into consideration. The ultimate decision, however, for their enshrinement lies with the Selection Committee.

A group of 50 people, comprising primarily of media members, is the ultimate decision maker on the Hall of Fame. Each franchise gets a representative from their local media. Aside from this group, 15 delegates form the rest of the crew.

Among the delegates, a PFWA representative holds his term for two years, while all others are open-ended designations, only to be terminated in case of death, incapacitation, retirement, or resignation.

The only real criteria for any player or coach to join the group is their retirement. Each player must wait a minimum of five years, and a coach for one, before they officially become eligible for a spot in the Hall of Fame. However, the same rules don’t apply to other contributors, like executives and owners, who can be voted in at any point in time.

The actual process for their election begins with the fans. Any player, coach, or contributor can be nominated by the fans via letters or emails. The selection committee, over three subsequent meetings, narrows the field down to 25 candidates, known as the semi-finalists.

In November, that core is further downsized to a 15-member finalist list, achieved through mail balloting. Additionally, Seniors and Contributors are added to the list by a separate subcommittee of the selection committee.

These are defined as players who finished their careers over 25 years ago, or personnel who contributed to the game in a capacity other than playing. As a result, the final list includes 18 names that are nominated solely based on their contributions to the sport.

 

Each year, before the Super Bowl, the selection committee makes its official election, known as Selection Saturday. From the list, a minimum of four to a maximum of eight candidates get the bid to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Each individual requires at least 80% support from the committee, before finally earning their spot in the most prestigious group of the sport.
