mexico city — A fire and explosion in a store in northwestern Mexico on Saturday killed at least 23 people, including children, and injured 12 others, state authorities said.
Sonora state governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video posted on social media that the fire occurred in downtown Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state.
Sonora’s public prosecutor, Gustavo Salas Chavez, announced the death toll and said the injured were taken to six hospitals in Hermosillo.
Salas Chavez said that preliminary investigations showed that the deaths were caused by “inhalation of toxic gases.”
He added: “At the present time, we do not have any indication that leads us to assume that the fire was intentional,” noting that the authorities have not ruled out any line of investigation.
Photos circulating on social media show a massive fire sweeping through the Waldo’s store. One video showed a burned man collapsing on the asphalt a few meters from the store’s entrance.
