The 2025 season kicks off Thursday, August 28 at 5:30 p.m. against Boise State!

The early days of training camp are great for seeing some best-on-best action on the practice fields, and the Bucs are fortunate to have a whole lot of talent to create some intriguing best-on-best matchups, including veteran outside linebacker Haason Reddick and rising right tackle Luke Goedeke. The two have been in a constant back-and-forth war on both pass rushing downs and run downs.

There’s been a fair share of give and take between the two over the first week-plus in training camp. Goedeke managed to stonewall Reddick in one rep during Tuesday night’s practice for one of his better wins thus far, while Reddick managed to blow by Goedeke for a nice win on Friday morning. Overall, it’s been a pretty even battle, and it’s one that is building a mutual respect between two guys who are new teammates to each other this season.

As the two continue to go head-to-head, the 30-year-old pass rusher and the 26-year-old right tackle are making each other better and better. They were both extremely complimentary of the other after Friday’s practice, and it’s clear both guys are benefitting and learning from the work they’re putting in against each other on the field at One Buc Place.

Haason Reddick: “Luke Is A Tremendous Talent”

Haason Reddick is entering his ninth season in the NFL, and he’s played at a high level for much of his career. He had double-digit sacks each year from 2020 and 2023, so it’s fair to say he’s matched up with – and beaten – a whole lot of talented tackles throughout his time in the pros.

So, when Reddick spoke for nearly a full minute on Friday about his training camp battles with Luke Goedeke, his words carried a lot of weight.

“Luke is a tremendous talent,” Reddick said. “We’re out here and we’re battling every day. Iron sharpens iron. It might sound cliché, I know everybody hears that a lot but we’re really out here battling. I love going up against him because he’s a tremendous talent. He has strong hands, really strong hands. [If] he gets his hands on you it’s going to be really hard to get them off [of] you and I love to see that. For me it makes it – it’s actually putting me against somebody that I have to work against which is actually going to make me better and I know it’s the same thing for him.

“Sometimes he’ll come up and ask me, ‘What did you see here? What did you think about this?’ And I love that from him because at the end of the day he’s still a veteran, a little bit younger than me but he still wants to be better, he’s still trying to get better. I think as long as he continues that mentality [with] the work ethic that he has, he is going to be a really great tackle in this league.”

Goedeke’s star has risen over the last couple of seasons, and this offseason felt like the first time his name really became better known throughout the league and on a national level. He’s in line for a contract extension from the Bucs for good reason, and getting such praise from a proven pass rusher from Reddick can only be a good thing for his confidence as he enters a contract year.

Luke Goedeke: “Haason Is An Elite Pass Rusher”

Luke Goedeke is naturally a man of fewer words, but he was plenty willing to talk about what it’s been like matching up with Haason Reddick over the first week and a half of training camp.

“Yeah, Haason, he is an elite pass rusher. “It is a great battle going against him every day in 1-on-1s and team drills. He brings speed, he brings power, he kind of brings it all as a pass rusher. I am excited to see him on Sundays. It is like one of those old adages: ‘iron sharpens iron.’ So, I am excited — he is definitely a great player.”

Goedeke has obviously matched up with some elite pass rushers over the last two years in game settings, and he’s learned and grown a great deal through those experiences. But there’s no arguing against the idea that Reddick is the best and most established pass rusher the fourth-year pro has lined up against on the practice fields at One Buc Place.

That old adage of iron sharpening iron was brought up by both Reddick and Goedeke independently, and that’s exactly what’s happening when the two line up against each other day in and day out. It can only help Reddick as he looks to rebound from a down year with the Jets in 2024, and at the same time, it’ll work wonders for Goedeke as he prepares to take the next step in what is a contract year for him.

Best-on-best. How can you not love this time of the year?
