Glen Powell just gave us the Hollywood tea we didn’t know we needed. The “Twisters” heartthrob recently opened up about an incredibly awkward encounter he had with a “toxic” canceled celebrity at a high-profile party, and honestly, the secondhand embarrassment is real.
Speaking candidly on Jake Shane‘s Therapuss podcast this week, Powell didn’t hold back when describing the uncomfortable situation. “I was at a party and there was somebody that had basically been on the ropes in terms of sort of getting canceled… It was one of those Hollywood parties where it’s like there are cameras and press and all that stuff,” the 36-year-old actor explained.
Initially, things seemed pretty normal. Powell admits he was actually excited to meet this person because, as he put it, “this person had made a lot of, some of my favorite movies, and I was like, ‘oh, like, this is great.’” The mystery celebrity approached Powell, introduced themselves, and Powell responded enthusiastically as a fan of their work.
However, the vibe quickly shifted when a photographer spotted the pair chatting. That’s when Powell realized he was potentially walking into a PR nightmare. “And this person was recently canceled. And it was not good. I was a fan of their work, but not a fan of their choices so I was just kind of being nice,” Powell revealed.

The moment the photographer suggested taking a picture together, Powell’s internal alarm bells started going off. He knew immediately that being photographed with this particular celebrity could spell trouble for his own reputation. “But then when they want to take a picture with you, I realized very quickly how like, I was like, ‘oh, I don’t know if it’s a good idea,’” he recalled.
What makes this story even more cringe is that Powell says the canceled celebrity completely picked up on his hesitation. Despite the awkwardness, Powell stuck to his guns and politely declined the photo op. His reasoning was pretty brutal but understandable: “I realized this guy, his face is toxic, you know, like going out to the world. Like people are having a visceral reaction to this person in terms of the bad choices they’ve made.”

Powell cleverly tied this real-life experience back to his new Hulu series “Chad Powers,” where he plays a disgraced football player trying to rebuild his reputation. He made a clear distinction between his fictional character and the celebrity he encountered, explaining that while some people deserve second chances, others have crossed lines that can’t be uncrossed.
The Top Gun: Maverick star has kept the celebrity’s identity under wraps, which has naturally sent social media into detective mode. Everyone’s trying to figure out who this mystery person could be, with names like Armie Hammer, Kevin Spacey, and James Franco being thrown around by internet sleuths.
