The New York Giants are entering the season on a very short leash. With the ownership group unhappy with how the last few years have gone, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen could have their jobs on the line. As a result, they need to make sure that the team gets off on the right foot from the jump.
Unfortunately, their performance in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders left a lot to be desired. The newly revamped defense had an overall solid outing, giving up 21 points to Jayden Daniels and Co. However, the offense is where the Giants left a lot on the board. As a result, Daboll had some interesting comments about the quarterback position, sparking rumors that Russell Wilson could lose the starting job to Jaxson Dart much earlier than anticipated.
Time for Jaxson Dart to Replace Russell Wilson on the Giants Horizon
When New York signed both Wilson and Jameis Winston in the offseason, it became clear that they wanted to remain competitive this season. However, a trade back into the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to draft Dart gave some insight into their long-term plans.
For the time being, Dart could develop in the wings, while the veteran duo helds it down. Unfortunately, the first week of the season did not inspire a ton of confidence in the offense.
The unit as a whole tallied less than 250 yards on offense, with Wilson struggling mightily in the passing game. Completing just 17 of his 37 passing attempts, he recorded 168 yards and no touchdowns.
After the game, Daboll did not give a clear answer on who the starter would be next week when the Giants have another divisional game, this time against the Dallas Cowboys. “We’re going to get home and look at our game.”
Even though he made it clear that he did not put this loss squarely on Wilson’s shoulders, he also didn’t offer any clarity about the quarterback spot moving forward. This week, Dart was second in the depth chart behind the starter, with a few packages specifically designed for him.
While he did not take the field, it seems clear that he is the long-term solution for the organization. It might just be that the switch to their long-term plan happens far sooner than fans in New York may have anticipated.

“I’d say with everybody offensively, it’s everyone included, we all have to be better, every coach, every player. We had six points there,” Daboll said. “Just not good enough. So we have to do better there.”
During the preseason, Dart was absolutely electrifying, completing 32 of his 47 passing attempts in three games for 372 yards and three touchdowns. His demeanour and poise also made him an immediate fan favorite, further elevating his chances of taking over the starter’s role sooner rather than later.
