Russell Wilson and the New York Giants now know who their first opponent will be. Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders also know who they will be playing.
Both teams have known for months that they would eventually square off. They simply didn’t know when. Now, they know they won’t have to wait long for at least one matchup.
NFL Fans React to Commanders’ Week 1 Scheduled Opponent Being Russell Wilson
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Commanders and Giants are set to square off in Week 1 of the 2025 season. Fans reacted to the news in droves, noting that it could be Wilson against Daniels. Yet, some fans didn’t expect much from the Giants, even with the rebuilt offense.

Others were not so fast to jump on the anti-Wilson bandwagon.
“Easy win for the Giants,” one said.
Another added: “This game is gonna be closer than people think.”
“Commanders 0-1 wow,” another said.
The NFL season opener is already known to be the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Sept. 4. The Friday NFL game in Week 1, meanwhile, will be the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Los Angeles Chargers.
As such, the timing of the Commanders-Giants game can only take place on Sunday, Sept. 7, or Monday, Sept. 8. Either way, Week 1 of the NFL calendar appears to be on deck for two NFC East matchups.
Wilson Isn’t Guaranteed To Face the Commanders Just Yet
Of course, one assumption for the game is that Wilson will be under center in Week 1. However, there’s also the possibility that this won’t be the case since the Giants did draft Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft and also signed veteran Jameis Winston.
As such, Wilson finds himself in the mentor and bridge quarterback role. However, while that title usually comes with a Week 1 start, there are no guarantees. Wilson missed the first few weeks of the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers due to injury and was benched with the Denver Broncos the year prior to finish a nearly playoff-caliber season.
At this stage in his career, no starts are guaranteed. One would think that with a 75.3 QB+ metric score, Wilson should at least reach the first game of the season. That said, Dart could be stiff competition coming off an SEC and FBS-leading production level.

Dart earned 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also led the FBS in yards per attempt, suggesting that he won’t be afraid to push the ball downfield. With a 69.3% completion percentage coupled with that ability, Wilson is set to have his hands full.
Will Dart or Wilson start the 2025 NFL season?
