Gabrielle Union is sharing how her daughters Zaya, 17, and Kaavia, 6, are bonding before her eldest goes to college.
In a recent exclusive with People Magazine, the actress shared that her daughters have been enjoying extra bonding time now that they’re attending the same school.
“It’s funny because Zaya’s a senior and [Kaavia’s] in kindergarten at the same school,” Union shared in her interview. “And so during Kaav’s lunch, Zaya comes and hangs out with Kaav. And this is really special that they’re at the same school, at least for one year.”
Although the 17-year-old teen hasn’t confirmed where she will be headed to in the fall, we know that in March of 2024 Zaya visited the University of Washington. Even though we don’t necessarily know where Zaya will call home for the next four years of her academic career, we do know, what she is interested in pursuing, astrobiology.
“[She’s] an astrobiology major,” Union said. “So we can’t help with that. We haven’t been able to help with homework since the fourth grade, but we’re excited for next year.” And of course, as any parent would be, the Bring it On alum is “scared but excited,” for the next step in her stepdaughter’s journey.
Union shares her children with husband, NBA legend, Dwayne Wade. The 52-year-old is not only stepmom to Zaya; she is also stepmother to Wade’s other children: son, Zaire, 22, son, and son, Xavier, 11. Wade and Union are parents to daughter Kaavia, and Wade is also guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris.
The Being Mary Jane actress is not just a stepparent to Zaya. The pair truly have a unique mother/daughter relationship. In a cover interview with Seventeen Magazine, the teen told the outlet that, when it comes to dating, her parents are “really cool about it,” but it is with Union that she exclusively “love[s] to dish the dirt” with.
“Me and my stepmom love to dish the dirt and tap into the high school gossip. She gets excited for me when I’m like, ‘Oh, I like this person.’ “
Everyone is eagerly awaiting the news of where Zaya will be heading to school this fall. In the meantime, it’s touching to see her making the most of this special time bonding with her little sister, Kaavia.
