The refurbished New York Giants quarterback room has fans excited for what is to come in 2025. After years of struggling with Daniel Jones at the helm, the G-men finally have options and depth.
Ex-NFL QB Sees Clear Option for Giants Starting Spot
Earlier this offseason, general manager Joe Schoen brought in two former AFC North QBs in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. While many thought the two veterans would battle it out for the starting job, Schoen and New York brass were not finished yet. After the club selected Penn State’s Abdul Carter third overall, the club traded back into the first round to acquire Jaxson Dart at 25th overall.
In what will be a fascinating duel to become New York’s QB1, one former NFL QB believes the choice is simple. Dan Orlovsky joined “The Pat McAfee Show” on May 13, where he and the cast discussed the talented room.
“Daboll and Schoen, their [Giants] head coach and GM, I think you probably lean Russell early on,” Orlovsky said. “Russ is really hoping to make sure that you guys are winning games, [be] competitive, and the future of that organization is that head coach and general manager.”
“I think Russ can play good enough, we saw it last year — gives you chances to win games,” Orlovsky said.

I don’t think they should rush Jaxson Dart and I think it will pay dividends” ~ @danorlovsky7 #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/zvZgw49CWd

Orlovsky Sees Dart’s NFL QB Comp as Top 3 Pick From 2024
The former fifth-round pick went on to say that rushing Dart would be a mistake for the Giants.
“I don’t really believe the Giants should rush Jaxson Dart, in the least bit,” Orlovsky said. “I said this a little bit about Drake Maye last year, and obviously it paid dividends for them, New England, to play him.”
Orlovsky continued, though, saying, “There are some flaws in Jaxson Dart’s game that remind me of Drake Maye; they’re so physically talented I call them lazy feet. That can get you in danger in the league if you play too early. But, if you’re the Giants, you’re probably thinking some time, like, Thanksgiving. … He’s gotta learn so much about quarterbacking in the NFL, the huddle, the cadence.”
The University of Connecticut alumnus says that Dart in Ole Miss’ offense is actually a perk of his entering the NFL.
“There’s the thought process that Jaxson Dart would get to the line of scrimmage and Lane Kiffin would tell him the coverage and the play all the time, and that’s a negative cause he can’t think,” said Orlovsky. “I actually look at it a little bit differently.”
“If you’re well-coached, which I would believe he is at Ole Miss, as long as he knows why he’s getting calls, or why he’s getting signals from the sideline, that’s all that matters. You gotta know what we’re getting into and why. You can teach a guy how to get you there, but you gotta make sure he understands why we’re calling those certain plays.”
The mix of veterans and youth in the Giants’ locker room will be a lovely option at their disposal for the first time in a long time. With three very eligible QBs, who will earn the starting job for Brian Daboll and the Giants?
