Ezra Miller has made a rare public appearance, giving an exclusive interview where they discussed their Hollywood comeback and addressed their brief appearance at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which sparked widespread discussion.
The star stepped back into the spotlight for the first time since 2021 at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival in Cagliari, Italy, on Thursday. In conversation with Lo Speciale Giornale (watch below), as quoted by Page Six, Miller opened up about where they stand with the movie industry, describing it as “on tentative grounds.”
Miller, who faced several legal issues throughout 2022, also talked about their lightning-fast appearance at the Cannes premiere of Die, My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsey. Instead of walking the press line, they dashed across it.

“I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world who is Lynne Ramsey — who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers,” they said, speaking about Ramsey, who previously directed them in 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin.
They added, “I’d say on tentative grounds,” when asked about their current relationship with cinema.
Miller revealed they’re working on an unnamed film project with Ramsey as co-writer. “That will likely be the first thing I do,” they mentioned about their professional comeback. “I’ve been writing a lot, because you can do that in solitude,” Miller continued. “Which has been friendly to me.”

While returning to Cannes was challenging, Miller said they would “do anything” for Ramsey, even if the festival scene was intense.
“If you’ve been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo will be there, you know what I mean?”
Miller had stayed out of the spotlight since their 2022 legal troubles, starting with two Hawaii arrests. The first involved incidents at a karaoke bar in March, leading to a no contest plea. Shortly after, two residents filed a restraining order against Miller over harassment and threats, though it was later dropped.
In April, Miller faced another arrest for second-degree assault, allegedly throwing a chair that hit a woman at a private event.

June 2022 brought more controversy. One parent accused Miller of grooming their child from age 12. Another claimed Miller “menaced their family one evening in their downstairs neighbor’s home and acted inappropriately toward” a 12-year-old child. No charges were filed.
Later, Miller addressed the claims publicly, stating: “I have been unjustly and directly targeted by an individual who the facts have shown has a history of such manipulative and destructive action.”
That same month, reports surfaced claiming Miller was housing a mother and three children at their Vermont farm in unsafe conditions. By August, Miller told authorities the family hadn’t lived there for months.
