Emma Raducanu Pays Tribute as Eugenie Bouchard Wraps Up Career in Montreal
Bouchard, a household name in Canada following her breakout run to the Wimbledon final in 2014, officially retired after her final match in Montreal. Having announced earlier that this year’s National Bank Open would be her swan song, the 31-year-old used her wildcard entry to deliver one last performance in front of a home crowd.
After notching a first-round win over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, her first singles victory in nearly two years, Bouchard’s journey came to an end in the second round with a 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 loss to 17th seed Belinda Bencic. The final match was a full-circle moment at the very venue where Bouchard first picked up a racket as a child.

Among those who recognized the significance of Bouchard’s retirement was 2021 US Open champion Raducanu. The Brit reposted Tennis Canada’s farewell message to Bouchard on her Instagram story, adding, “Thank you Genie, loved watching you compete and play. Wish you all the best for your next chapter.”
Bouchard acknowledged the message by resharing Raducanu’s story and responding with an encouraging reply, “keep killing it emma!”
Raducanu is currently making her second appearance at the WTA 1000 event in Montreal. The Brit cruised past Elena-Gabriela Ruse and 32nd seed Peyton Stearns to reach the third round, where she will take on fifth seed Amanda Anisimova. This will be their third meeting on the WTA Tour, with the Brit holding a dominant 2-0 head-to-head record. The winner of this match will face either Anna Kalinskaya or 10th seed Elina Svitolina in the fourth round.
Bouchard Pays Touching Tribute to Her Family in Her Farewell Speech
In a farewell speech after playing her last match of her career, Bouchard shared how special it was to end her career in Montreal, where her tennis journey began.
“It’s so special to play my last match here in Montreal, on this court in front of you guys. I remember being a little kid sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I would play on this court one day. I grew up playing on these courts and courts all around Montreal and near here. So it feels like such a full circle moment to finish my career here,” Bouchard said.
She thanked her parents, Michel and Julie, and her siblings, Beatrice, William, and Charlotte, for their support and sacrifices throughout her career.
“Tennis has given me so much. I’m filled with so much gratitude for this sport and for the people who helped me along the way. I want to thank my family: mom, dad, my sisters, and brother for their sacrifice and support,” she added.
“It’s only because of that that I am standing here today, and I want you guys to know that when this crowd cheers for me, they’re cheering for you guys too, because I wouldn’t be here without you,” she continued.
