Doug Ruch: Terminally ill cancer patient spends his remaining months traveling to volunteer in all 50 states

“I thought myself, I have two options. I can sit at home and wait for death, or I can go out and live,” Doug Roche told ABC7 News.

San Francisco (KGO) – When Doug Roche was told that he had only 12 to 18 months to live, he did not choose to stay at home. Instead, hit the road – on a mission to help the largest possible people while he can still.

A 55 -year -old cancer is now traveling across the United States, and volunteers in all fifty states.

In the past two weeks alone, RUCH has donated its time in eight states, including Project Open Hand in San Francisco, which recently provided meals to the needy.

“I thought myself, I have two options. I can sit at home and wait for death, or I can go out and live,” Roche told ABC7 News. “So I decided to go out and live – and for this reason I planned for this 50 -countries round.”

Roche’s story has already inspired others to act.

Four people joined him in Project Open Hand after identifying his journey. His final goal is to motivate more people to return the favor to their societies, regardless of their circumstances.

Now in Oregon, RUCH continues to add more stations and volunteer opportunities to develop its growing line.

He told Dion LIM from ABC7 that although his illness brings physical restrictions, he feels an increase in energy and purpose in the days he volunteered.
