Does Ann-Margret Have Children? Inside the Actress’ Family

Ann-Margret’s known for some of her great Hollywood roles, including Pocketful of Miracles, Bye Bye Birdie, Viva Las Vegas, Carnal Knowledge and more. Outside of Hollywood, the actress got real about her marriage, infertility and challenges she faced throughout her career.

Does Ann-Margret Have Children?

Ann-Margret, who married Roger Smith in 1967, does not have any biological children. She opened up about her experiences with infertility in the past.

“The point is, if I am meant to have a child, I will have one,” she said in a 1985 issue of McCall’s, per UPI. “Whatever my higher power feels is right for me, I will accept. I know this may sound simplistic, but I believe in the serenity prayer: ‘God, grant the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.’”

She Has 3 Stepchildren From Roger Smith’s 1st Marriage

The Sweden-born actress is a stepmom to three stepchildren, Tracey Smith, Jordan Smith and Dallas Smith, Roger’s kids from his first marriage to Victoria Shaw, which lasted from 1956 to 1965.

During a sit-down with Interview magazine with George Hamilton, Ann-Margret was asked if she “tried to get pregnant for a long time,” to which she responded, “Yes.”

George continued, “Then you finally said, ‘I’ve had it with this hormone-induced situation,’ and you gave it up,” to which the actress responded, “Yes.”

“But the three children, you’ve taken them on as your own, right?” the Crime and Punishment U.S.A. actor asked.

“The wicked stepmother of the west,” Ann-Margret replied.

“Are you a disciplinarian? Are they infused with Scandinavian values?” George asked Ann-Margret, to which she responded, “Yes,” with a laugh.

“What in your early life that your mother and your father infused in you have you brought to your stepchildren?”

“Respect,” she replied. “I met them when they were 3, 6, and 7, and now they’re not. Two of them are doctors. Well, I don’t want to get into that because it’s very, very private.”

Roger died in 2017 at age 84. Ann-Margret said that her marriage to the actor was one of her proudest achievements.

“When I look back at my life, I am most proud of my marriage,” she told Closer in February 2022.

“We both wanted it to work. And it did work,” the multitalented star said of their 50-year union. “We were together night and day. We loved each other and were always in each other’s corner.”

In a subsequent March 2024 interview with Closer, Ann-Margret, revealed that her late husband previously gifted her a cat named Harley.

“He brought him home for me 20 years ago. He had a bomber jacket on, and we open the jacket and there’s this teeny little baby. So he’s been with me all this time!” she told Closer of living in Hollywood Hills with her cat and a dog named Bambi.

Ann-Margret told Closer in March 2023 that she thinks of Roger “every single day.”

“I’m in my home that we bought back in 1968,” she said. “The sun is shining and I’m looking out over the pool. I’m actually very happy.”
