Coach Prime made the brave decision to speak publicly about his diagnosis after missing several weeks of Colorado practice and keeping the news private while he processed it. According to Sanders and his medical team, doctors found a tumor on his bladder wall and gave him a few options for treatment.
He chose to undergo a cystectomy, a procedure where doctors completely remove the bladder to eliminate the tumor. The surgery was successful, and Sanders is now cancer-free.

During his press conference, where he discussed the diagnosis, Sanders emphasized the importance of regular screenings. He explained that he had no idea the tumor was there, and doctors only found it by surprise during a routine checkup.
Coach Prime’s message about getting checked is a good one. In an interview on NewsNation, Dr. Idries Abdur-Rahman supported Sanders’ call for more screenings, noting a rise in bladder cancer diagnoses in the United States.
“The incidence of bladder cancer is actually going up,” Abdur-Rahman said.
It’s a scary trend, and Sanders is fortunate that his doctors were able to catch the tumor early. However, as Abdur-Rahman and Sanders emphasize, regular screenings are vital to protecting your health.
Abdur-Rahman also highlighted that there are things that people can do to prevent bladder cancer, such as exercise, diet, and limiting alcohol consumption.

“A lot of these are things you can control,” Abdur said. “Bladder cancer’s increased if you have certain things in your diet. People that drink excessive amounts of alcohol and things of that nature.”
Coach Prime’s successful cystectomy and recovery are great news, but they are also another reminder of how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle and keep up with regular screenings.
Now that Sanders is healthy, the Buffaloes’ head coach is expected to return to the sideline this fall as he continues building Colorado into a Big 12 contender.
