Deputy hospitalized after semi crashes into parked patrol vehicle on I-25

DENVER (KDVR) – A deputy is in the hospital after a semi-trailer collided with a parked Weld County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle on Interstate 25 Wednesday morning.

At approximately 4:13 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol said it responded to a crash after a semi collided with a Weld County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle that was parked on the right shoulder of I-25 behind an unoccupied Nissan Rogue, waiting for a tow truck after a DUI arrest.

State Patrol said the truck veered off the road and into a ditch between Interstate 25 and Frontage Road. Just before 7 a.m., a SkyFOX aircraft flew over the scene, where the semi was still on the side of the road.

A deputy was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The semi driver did not report any injuries, the State Patrol said.

The Colorado State Patrol Hazmat Unit also responded after the fuel leak from the accident.

Only one southbound lane of I-25 near mile marker 236 was open, but just before 7 a.m., all lanes reopened. Traffic is flowing, but the patrol said there may be some remaining slowdown as the scene is cleared.

At this time, it is not clear what caused the accident. The State Patrol said the incident remains under investigation.

FOX31’s Lisa D’Souza heads to the scene to gather more information.
